Instagram automation rules: what Meta allows, and what gets accounts in trouble

The difference between official automation and tools that put your account at risk, and the rules every DM automation should follow.

Official API, or not

There are two kinds of Instagram automation. Official tools connect through Meta's messaging API: you log in on Instagram's own screen, approve specific permissions, and the tool never sees your password. Unofficial tools ask for your username and password, or run in a browser pretending to be you.

Unofficial tools break Instagram's terms and are a common reason accounts get restricted. If a tool asks for your Instagram password, do not use it. ChatConvert is an official integration: it connects through Instagram's login and uses only the permissions you approve.

What an official tool can access

When you connect, Instagram shows the permissions being requested. For DM and comment automation they cover your profile basics, your messages and your comments. You can remove access at any time from your Instagram settings, and the tool stops at once.

The rules every automation should follow

  • Only message people who messaged you first, or reply privately to someone who commented.
  • Reply within 24 hours of their last message. After that, wait for them to write again.
  • Send one private reply per comment, then let them continue the conversation.
  • Do not send the same promotion to everyone who ever messaged you.
  • Always give people a way to reach a person.

What looks like spam

Instagram watches for patterns that look like spam: hundreds of identical public replies in a few minutes, links sent to people who did not ask for them, and messages that keep coming after someone stopped replying.

Good automation avoids them by design: rotating public replies, a cap on public replies per hour and per post, one DM per person per post, and follow-ups that stop when the conversation does.

When your team steps in

Your team should only need to step in for buyers who are serious, and automation should step back the moment they do. Nobody wants a bot message in the middle of a real conversation. In ChatConvert, any reply from your team pauses automation for that person.

Customer data and deletion

Meta requires official apps to explain what they do with data and to delete it when asked. ChatConvert keeps each business's data in its own space, encrypts API keys, and deletes data on request. The details are in the privacy policy and on the data deletion page.

A checklist before you switch anything on

  1. The tool connects with Instagram's login, not your password.
  2. Every message answers someone who wrote first or commented.
  3. Follow-ups stop after one nudge and stay inside 24 hours.
  4. Public replies are varied and limited per hour.
  5. Anyone can reach a person, and your team's replies pause the bot.
